Adding a modpack to your SimpleGameHosting server is extremely easy, and this guide covers everything you need to know about how you can add modpacks to your Minecraft server on SimpleGameHosting!

The first step is purchasing your SimpleGameHosting server. With that, it is worth knowing how much RAM you need for a server that is running a modpack.

How Much RAM Do Modpack Servers Need

The amount of RAM your server needs can vary based on several factors. However, since most modpack servers are not built to handle more than 5 to 10 players at a time, we use that range as a general guideline. Instead of focusing on the player count, it's more helpful to consider the number of mods in the modpack when estimating RAM requirements.

To make this easier, try our RAM Guide Calculator to find the best Minecraft server plan for your setup. If you want a more in-depth explanation, you can also check out our full guide on choosing the right RAMfor your server.

For modpacks available through our one-click installer, you can search for them here to see the minimum recommended RAM. If the modpack you are using is not listed, don't worry. You can still add it to your server manually.

General Guide:

  • Vanilla Minecraft Server: 2 GB RAM
  • Light Modpacks (fewer than 100 mods): 4-6 GB RAM
  • Moderate Modpacks (100-200 mods): 6-8 GB RAM
  • Heavy Modpacks (200+ mods): 8-10 GB+ RAM

If you are experiencing lag on your server after you install a modpack, most likely, you are running into a RAM issue, and upgrading your server may be needed.

Step 1: Accessing the Control Panel

With your server purchased and the appropriate amount of RAM selected, we can move to adding the modpack to your server. Luckily, this can be done in just a few clicks.

First things first, you will need access the SimpleGameHosting Contol Panel. Then, login to your account.

Step 2: Clearing Your Server Files

Before installing a modpack, make sure to stop your server and delete any existing files, game versions, or modpacks to prevent conflicts. Even if you just purchased the server, there may still be files that need to be removed depending on the setup option you selected.

🛑Wait: We recommend creating a backup before proceeding. You can follow this guide to learn how. The following steps will delete your current world/setup.

1. Head to the console tab and press Stop to ensure the server is offline. Then go to the Modpacks and Versions tab to see if a modpack is currently installed.

  • If a modpack is installed, click the Uninstall button in the top right corner, follow the on-screen prompts to confirm uninstalling the current modpack, and wait for the modpack to uninstall.

  • If no modpack is installed, go to the Version Manager tab. If a game version is listed, click Uninstall next to it, and wait for the version to uninstall.

2. Open your File Manager, select all visible files, click Delete at the bottom, and follow the on-screen prompt.

3. Once everything has been cleared, return to the Modpacks and Versions tab.

Step 3: Installing a Modpack

Make sure you're on the  Modpacks and Versions tab before starting.

1. Browse through the list of modpacks and find the one you want to install on your server. When using the search bar, make sure to press Enter or click the Search button on the right. Modpacks are grouped by launcher, so be sure to select the correct one such as CurseForge, Modrinth, FTB, Technic, or VoidsWrath when searching for your modpack.

  • Once the server is back online, you and your players can enjoy the new modpack!

Step 5: Joining a Minecraft Server with a Modpack

In order to join your Minecraft server once the modpack is installed, you and anyone who plays on the server will need to download and install the modpack locally. Then, they will need to launch the modpack and join your server with a Minecraft installation that has the modpacks and all of its mods installed. Using the launcher for that modpack is the best way to get it. Here are links to the apps for the modpack launchers we support.

Unfortunately, every modpack is different, but there are amazing guides for playing Minecraft with specific modpacks that you can follow to get your modpack installed locally to join your server.
