How To Backup Your Minecraft Server

3 min. readlast update: 06.25.2025

Backing up your Minecraft server is something you need to do before you make any major changes to your server. This ensures that if something goes wrong, you can easily rollback to the backup you made and continue enjoying your server.

Below, we outline how you can make a backup of your server using the SimpleGameHosting Control Panel.

Login to The SimpleGameHosting Panel

Login to the control panel. Once you are logged in, select the server you want to backup.

Create a Backup of Your Minecraft Server

Before you begin, keep in mind that your server can store up to 10 backups.

1. With your server selected, navigate to the Backups tab in the menu bar at the top. Here, you will see any active backups for your server.

2. You will see a Create Backup button in the bottom right of this page. Click that to open the “Create server backup” dialogue box.

  • In this box, simply name your backup (this can be anything or even left blank resulting in your backup just having the date and time the backup is made as the name of the backup).

undefined

💡Tip: If the Create Backup button is missing, you’ve likely reached the limit of 10 backups. To create a new one, delete an older backup first.

3. Click the Start Backup button.

  • Your backup will then start automatically. You know it is in progress as there will be a circle spinning on the new backup. Once this spinning circle icon disappears, your backup is complete.

Accessing Your Server’s Backup

Navigate back to the “Backups” tab in the control panel if you aren't there already. In the Backups area, you will see the backup of the server you just made along with any other backups of your server.

There are a few options for backups that can be accessed by clicking the three (...) dots to the right of the file name.

📥 Download

Clicking this downloads a copy of the backup. This can be good if you want to test things in a local game or just download them for safekeeping.

⚠️Warning: Restoring a backup will erase all progress made since that backup was created.

1. Click the "Restore" button to restore your server to the backup selected. Your page will change to a Restoring from Backup screen. Once the backup is done restoring, your page will refresh back.

2. Head to the Console tab and press the Start or Restart button to turn the server online.

🔒 Lock

If you lock a backup, it cannot be deleted until it is unlocked. This is a great way to ensure you don’t accidentally delete or remove an important backup.

  • To lock a backup, simply click the three (...) dots, choose Lock

undefined

  • To unlock a backup, simply click the three (...) dots, choose Unlock. Then click "Okay" in the dialogue box that appears to confirm the unlocking.

🗑️ Delete

If the backup is unlocked, you will see a delete option for the backup. Doing so opens a dialogue box where you can click "Continue" to fully delete the backup.

undefined

⚠️Warning: Doing this permanently removes the backup, and it cannot be recovered.
