How to Update a Modpack on Your Server

5 min. readlast update: 11.07.2024

While some modpacks have stopped active development and have been on the same version for years, others are still actively being updated! These updates can have things such as balance tweaks, new content, and a whole range of other changes! In this guide, we'll show you how to update your server's modpack to the newest version!

⚠️Heads up! New modpack versions are not always compatible with worlds from previous versions! Always check the changelog for important information about updating your server's modpack version before attempting to update it! We also recommend making a backup before updating the modpack on your server!

Step 1: Turn the Server Off

First, ensure that your server is completely off. You can check your server's current status on the SimpleGameHosting Game Control Panel. Once you select the server you wish to manage, you will be brought to the server's console tab. From here you want to press the red stop button on the console.

Let your server shut down completely, and then head to the "File Manager" tab of the game control panel.

Step 2: Downloading your World Folder

Then, you'll need to download your world folder so you can reupload it later once the pack is updated. To do this, you'll first need to locate your world folder in your file manager. It will most likely be the folder called "world" in your file manager.

🌎 If you don't see a world folder, or see multiple folders with the word world in it, you need to ensure that you know which one is currently being loaded by the server. You can find this by finding the "level-name=" entry in the "server.properties" file.

Once you have located your world file, click the three dots to the right of it in the file manager, and then click archive.

This will create a new file in your file manager. The new file will start with the world "archive" and end with the ".tar.gz" file extension.

Once you have located this file, click the three dots to the right and click download to download the compressed world file.

Step 3: Uninstall Current Modpack Version

Next, head to the modpacks tab of the game control panel.

When you are at the modpack tab, click the uninstall button near the top. We will be uninstalling the current modpack version so that we can install the new version through the modpack installer.

This will ask if you are sure you want to uninstall the pack. Click 'Yes.' It will warn you that your world will be lost in the uninstallation process, but lucky for us, we already downloaded it!

🖐Heads up! If you installed the modpack on your server using our custom modpack install guide, then you will not have the uninstall button on your modpack panel! In that scenario, you will need to delete all the files in your file manager except for "eula.txt" and then follow the custom modpack install guide to reinstall the pack! Then you can follow this guide from Step 5 to reupload the world after installation.

Step 4: Install the New Version of the Modpack

After the uninstallation is done, we can now install the new version of the modpack! Find the modpack you wish to install and click the version dropdown to select the version you want.

👾 In the screenshots of this guide, we will be installing the same version of the modpack, but the steps will be the same when you are updating from an older version to a newer version.

Then, once the version is selected, you can click the install button to install the modpack onto your server!

⏲ If you don't see the new version of the modpack in the modpack installer tab, then we have not put it on our modpack installer just yet! You can either wait for us to put the updated version on the modpack installer, or install the new version manually using our custom modpack install guide!

Once you press the install button, it will ask to you to confirm that you wish to install the pack. Say yes, and then wait for the pack to fully install.

Step 5: Upload the World File to your Server

When the modpack install finishes, head back to your file manager on the game control panel. From here you will need to upload your world archive file that you downloaded earlier. Click the upload button in the top right and select the world archive file you downloaded.

📶 If your world file is larger than 300MBs, you will have to use SFTP to upload the file. You can follow our SFTP guide to get that setup and upload the file!

Once the world archive file is fully uploaded, you can click the three dots to the right of the file, and click "unarchive".

Once that unarchives fully, you should see a world folder inside your file manager!

Step 6: Start the Server

You can now head back to the "Console" tab of your game control panel.

From here, you can press the start button on your console, and your server will begin starting with your world! Your server's modpack has now been fully updated!
