While some modpacks have stopped active development and have been on the same version for years, others are still actively being updated! These updates can have things such as balance tweaks, new content, and a whole range of other changes! In this guide, we'll show you how to update your server's modpack to the newest version!
⚠️Warning: New modpack versions are not always compatible with worlds from previous versions! Always check the changelog for important information about updating your server's modpack version before attempting to update it! We also recommend making a backup before updating the modpack on your server!
Step 1: Turn the Server Off
First need to access the SimpleGameHosting Control Panel.
1. Navigate to panel.simplegamehosting.com and enter your login credentials in the provided field and click the Login button.
👋 Trouble loggin in? If you haven't logged into the panel before, check out this guide on setting up your account and accessing the panel.
2. After logging in successfully, you’ll be taken to the Console tab for your server. If you have more than one server, you’ll first see a dashboard listing all your available servers. Just click on the one you want to manage.
3. Make sure to turn the server offline on your Console tab by pressing the Stop button.
🛑Wait: Before you continue, make sure that your server has fully shut down. Once complete, you will often see the console display "Server marked as offline...".
Step 2: Downloading your World Folder
Next, you will need to download your world folder so you can upload it again later after updating your server.
1. In the File Manager, locate your world folder. This is usually named world, unless you have renamed it.
2. Once you find the correct folder, click the three dots to the right of it and choose Archive.
❓Not seeing your world folder? If you do not see a folder named world, or see multiple folders with names like world_nether or world_the_end, you will need to identify which one is currently being used by the server. You can do this by opening the server.properties file and finding the entry labeled level-name=. The value set there is the name of the world folder your server is currently using.
After archiving, a new file will appear in your File Manager. This file will begin with the word archive and end with the .tar.gz extension.
3. Once the archive file is created, click the three dots to the right of it and select Download to save the compressed world folder to your computer.
Step 3: Uninstall Current Modpack Version
1. Head to the Modpacks and Versions tab in the game control panel.
2. Click the Uninstall button in the top right corner and follow the on-screen prompts to confirm. When asked if you're sure you want to uninstall the pack, click Yes.
You may see a warning that your world will be lost during the uninstallation process but no worries, you already downloaded a backup of your world folder in the previous step.
🖐Heads up: If you originally installed the modpack using our Custom Modpack Install Guide, you will not see an Uninstall button on the Modpack panel. In this case, you’ll need to manually delete all files in your File Manager, then follow the Custom Modpack Install Guide again to reinstall the pack. Once that’s done, you can return to this guide at Step 5 to reupload your world.
Step 4: Wiping the Server Files
Once the uninstall is complete, go to the File Manager and select all the files listed. Then, delete them.
⚠️ Important: Make sure you have downloaded your world archive before deleting anything. This ensures you can restore your world later without any data loss.
Step 5: Install the New Version of the Modpack
Now that the uninstallation is complete, you can install the updated version of the modpack.
1. Go to the Modpacks and Versions tab and make sure you are on the Modpack Installer tab.
2. Use the search box to find the modpack you want to install. We're updating RLCraft in this example.
3. Select the version of the modpack you wish to use from the dropdown menu, then click Install. Confirm the installation and then wait for the installation to finish before moving on to the next step.
💡Tip: If you don't see the new version of the modpack in the modpack installer tab, then we have not put it on our modpack installer just yet! You can either wait for us to put the updated version on the modpack installer, or install the new version manually using our custom modpack install guide!
Step 6: Reuploading Your World
The method you use to upload your world folder depends on the size of the file. Below are the two options:
Method 1: World Files Smaller Than 300MBs
If your world archive is smaller than 300MB, you can upload it directly through the File Manager:
1. Click the Upload button in the top right corner of the File Manager.
2. Wait for the upload to complete.
3. Once the file appears, click the three dots next to it and select Unarchive.
This will extract your old world folder into the server’s file system.
4. Finally, go to the Console tab and click Start to bring your server online.
Method 2: World Files Larger Than 300MBs
Step 1: Getting Your SFTP Login Details
Click the SFTP tab in the top menu. Here, you’ll find your SFTP details, including the server address and username. You can click on each field to copy them. Keep this page open or save the details, you’ll need them shortly
Step 2: Accessing Your Server via SFTP
The easiest way to connect is by using the Quickconnect feature in FileZilla.
1. Open FileZilla and enter the following using your SFTP details:
- Host: (your server address from the SFTP Details page)
- Username:
- Password: (same as your control panel password)
💡Note: Leave the port section blank, it'll auto fill once you connect.
2. Confirm the information you entered is correct and then press the Quickconnect button to the right to connect.
- If a popup appears mentioning an "Unknown host key," that's normal and just click OK to continue.
3. Once you're connect to your server, you should see your server files show up in the right hand windows of the FilzeZilla app.
Step 3: Uploading Your World File
Once you are connected to your server, uploading the world archive file you downloaded earlier is simple.
1. Locate the archived world file (with the .tar.gz extension) that you downloaded in an earlier step.
2. In the right panel of FileZilla (or your preferred FTP app), drag and drop the archive file into the server’s root directory. Wait for the upload to finish, you can track the progress at the bottom left of the app.
3. After the upload is complete, return to the File Manager tab in your server’s control panel.
4. Locate the uploaded .tar.gz file. Click the three dots next to it and choose Unarchive. This will extract your old world folder back into the server’s files.
Step 7: Turning The Server Online
1. Go to the Console tab and press the Start button to launch your server. If everything is set up correctly, the server will come online without any issues.
2. Make sure you have downloaded the updated version of the modpack on your Minecraft client and are using it to launch the game.
3. Once the server is online, launch your updated modpack and connect to your server using your server address.
Your modpack is now successfully updated, and your old world has been restored and is ready to play!
