How to Add a Mod to A CurseForge Modpack (Server & Client-Side)

4 min. readlast update: 09.03.2024

Adding mods to pre-existing CurseForge packs can enhance your modded experience! You can add new content to a modpack that was never originally supposed to have it! In this guide, we'll teach you how to add mods to CurseForge modpacks on both the client and server side!

💻 This guide assumes you already have the modpack installed on both the client and server. We have guides available for installing modpacks on both the client and the server if you need those!

Downloading the Mod

You'll be able to find mods on websites such as CurseForge or Modrinth, but for the sake of this guide, I'll be using The Twilight Forest mod.

Be sure to download a version of the mod for the same version and mod loader that your modpack uses. For this, I will be using Forge 1.16.5 because that's the same version my modpack uses. However, for a server with Fabric mods, you would need to download the Fabric version of the mod for example.

Click on the version you want, and then click the black download button to get the .JAR file for the mod. You'll need this file to install the mod on the server and client.

Adding the Mod to Your Server

Step 1: Stopping the server

First, you'll have to stop your server through the SimpleGameHosting Game Panel console by clicking the Stop button.

Step 2: Access Your Mods Folder Through the File Manager

After you turn the server off, you'll need to access the mods folder on your server. Click on the File Manager button on your game panel.

After going to your File Manager, open the mods folder.

Step 3: Upload the Mod .JAR File

From there, you can upload the mod .JAR file you downloaded earlier in this guide. Just click the Upload button in the top right and select the .JAR file!

After waiting for a little bit, the mod will be uploaded. You'll see it added to the list of .JAR files inside of your mods folder.

Step 4: Start Server

And that's it! The mod is now installed on the server! Go back to your Console tab, and start the server back up!

✋If you haven't installed the mod on your client yet, keep following the guide! You will need to have the mod installed on your client as well to actually join the server. If you don't have the mod installed on both the server and the client, the server will not let you connect.

Adding the Mod to Your Client through the CurseForge Launcher

☝ You'll want to not have your game open before doing all of these steps! You can perform the steps the same way if your game is open, but you will have to restart your game afterwards if it is open during the mod installation process.

Step 1: Access Your Modpack Folder

To begin, you'll have to access the modpack files so you can add the mod to it. The easiest way to do this is through the CurseForge Launcher. Right-click on the modpack you wish to add the mod to, and then click Open Folder.

This will open your operating systems file manager and let you see all of the modpack files.

👨‍💻 These files might not be exactly the same as the ones in your modpack folder, and that's okay! Most modpacks have different file layouts from each other. As long as the folder generally looks like this and has some of these folders such as mods and config, then you know you're in the right place! The file explorer may also look a little different if you are on MacOS or Linux, but the steps are the same!

Step 2: Move the Mod .JAR File Into Mods Folder

Inside of this modpack folder, there will be a folder called mods. This is similar to the mods folder on your server, it contains all of the mods in the modpack.

In this mods folder, you will see all of the mod files that are in the modpack.

From here, move the mod .JAR file that you downloaded earlier in the guide

Now that the mod has been moved into that folder, you can start up the modpack and the mod will be added to your game and you can join the server!
