How to Update or Downgrade Mods on a Minecraft Server

3 min. readlast update: 08.06.2024

Did a mod you enjoy just get a big update that you're excited to play with, but the old version of the mod is installed on your server? Well, good news! The process to update that mod is super simple! In this guide, we will detail the steps to update (or downgrade) a mod on your minecraft server!

❗ Heads up! This guide only applies if the old version and new version of the mod you are updating or downgrading is for the SAME version of Minecraft. If you want to update your mod to a new version available for a different version of Minecraft, you can follow our "How To Add Mods to Your Minecraft Server" guide. This will guide you through installing the new version of Minecraft and adding the new version of the mod!

Step 1. Acessing the SimpleGameHosting Control Panel

To begin, you'll first have to access the SimpleGameHosting Control Panel and select the server you want to update/downgrade the mods on.

Step 2. Turn the Server Off

You'll have to ensure the server is off before you update or downgrade a mod, if the server is already offline, you can skip this step. If the server isn't offline though, navigate to the "Console" section of the Panel, and then click the "Stop" button on the console.

⚠️ Note: You may want to backup your Minecraft server before upgrading or download a mod, so you don't accidentally lose data if something goes wrong.

Step 3. Go to Your Mods Folder via the File Manager

After turning the server off, we'll have to go to the place where all the mods on your server are located, the "mods" folder. First, you'll want to go to the "File Manager" section of the panel.

Once on the File Manager, click on the folder that is called "mods"

From there, you should see all of the mods you have installed on your server, in my case. I only have one mod installed on my server.

Step 4. Delete the Current Mod

Next, you will have to delete the mod you wish to update or downgrade. If you don't delete the one currently installed, there is a high chance of a version conflict occuring and your server not starting up at all. To delete the mod installed, you will need to click the 3 dots to the right of the mod file and click delete.

Then, confirm the deletion by pressing the red delete button.

Step 5. Upload the Updated or Downgraded Mod

To upload the updated or downgraded version of the mod, click the upload button in the top right and select the new version of the mod you downloaded.

In my case, I'm uploading an updated version of the mod. But uploading a downgraded version of the mod will work the same way!

🚧 Be Careful! Downgrading mods while keeping the same world can lead to corruption in some cases. We highly recommend making a backup before making a downgrade to any of your mods.

Step 6. Turn your server back on

Now time to turn your server back on with the updated/downgraded version of the mod! Navigate back to your "Console" section of your panel.

Then, just click the start button, and your server will come online with the mod updated/downgraded!

✋ Make sure you also have the same version of the mod installed on your client! If you still have the old version of the mod installed on your own client, the server will not let you connect!
