How To Make Your Minecraft Server Private (Whitelist a Server)

3 min. readlast update: 10.17.2023

Making a Minecraft server private is actually very easy when you purchase your server with SimpleGameHosting.

First things first, though, you will need to be OP’d on your Minecraft server in order to run these commands and make your server private from in-game.

Otherwise, you can use the commands in your server’s console in order to make it private.

Whitelisting Your Minecraft Server

By whitelisting a Minecraft server, you are making it to where only the players you have given specific permission to can join the server. Unless you want anyone to be able to join your Minecraft server, we recommend whitelisting every Minecraft server.

✔️ Step 1: Activating Whitelist

First things first, you will need to turn the whitelist on. This can be done by running the /whitelist on command.

➡️ Once enabled, no one, including yourself, will be able to join your server until they are added to the whitelist. Players that are online, however, will remain online until they leave the server. Then, they won’t be able to rejoin until added to the whitelist.

👋 Step 2: Adding Players to The Whitelist

With the whitelist enabled, you can add you and your friends to the whitelist with the /whitelist add {Username} command.

Each player must be added to the whitelist one-by-one. You will also need to know a player’s username in order to add them to the whitelist.

🔍 Step 3: Viewing The Whitelist

After you have added players to the whitelist, the /whitelist list command can be ran in order to see what players have been whitelisted.

📝 Step 4: Managing Your Whitelist

Lastly, it is worth mentioning how you can manage your whitelist. There are two commands that can help with this.

/whitelist off will turn the whitelist off and let anyone join your Minecraft server as long as they have the IP address.

/whitelist remove {Username} will remove the specified user from the whitelist meaning they will no longer be able to join the server.

Who can whitelist a Minecraft server?

Anyone who has OP permissions or console access can add and remove players from the whitelist on your Minecraft server.

Quicklist of Whitelist Commands

  • /whitelist on: Turns on the whitelist on your server.
  • /whitelist off: Turns off the whitelist on your server
  • /whitelist add {username}: adds players to your server’s whitelist.
  • /whitelist remove {username}: Removes players from your server’s whitelist.
  • /whitelist list: Allows you to view all whitelisted players in chat.
