How To Add Modrinth Mods to a Minecraft Server

8 min. readlast update: 11.12.2025

Playing in a modded Minecraft singleplayer world can be fun, but it can also start to feel a little lonely over time. Maybe you want to share your creations and adventures with friends, or even create a server where others can join and build a community together.

This is where server hosting becomes useful. Setting up a modded Minecraft server allows multiple players to enjoy the same mods and features you’ve added to your game.  In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to take the mods from Modrinth and install them on a server so you and others can enjoy your modded experience together.

Getting Started

Before adding any mods to your server, it’s important to make sure the server is correctly configured to support them. This means the server must have the right game version and mod loader (such as Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge) that match the mods you plan to use. Before you begin, double check which mods you want to add and note both their supported Minecraft version and mod loader type, as this information is essential for setting up your server properly.

Another key factor to consider is RAM allocation. Your server needs enough memory to handle the mods and keep everything running smoothly. If there isn’t enough RAM, the server may fail to start or could crash soon after going online.

If you’re unsure how much RAM your server needs, we’ve got you covered! Check out our detailed help article that explains how to determine the right amount of RAM for your setup. You can find it here.

Setting Up The Server

⚠️Note: The steps below explain how to set up and configure a server using SimpleGameHosting. If you are creating a server on your own computer instead, we also have a complete guide that walks you through that process, which you can find here.

The steps for adding mods are mostly the same, but the setup process will look a little different if you are hosting the server on your own. We’ll do our best to include helpful information for both types of setups so you can follow along no matter how your server is hosted.

Step 1: Installing the Game Version and Mod Loader

First, you need to make sure your server has the correct game version and mod loader installed.

1. From your SimpleGameHosting control panel, open the Modpacks and Versions tab, then make sure you are on the Version Manager subtab.

2. Open the dropdown menu and find the mod loader your mods require. This could be Forge, Fabric, or Neoforge. Once you find it, select it to see a list of available game versions.

3. Choose and install the game version your mods need. When the installation finishes, the page will refresh automatically.

4. Go to the Console tab and click Start to turn the server online. This will create the necessary folders for your mods. Once the server has fully started, stop it again before moving to the next step.

If your server is not hosted with us, make sure you have downloaded and installed the correct mod loader server jar on your hosting device. After installing it, start the server at least once so it can create all the necessary folders, including the mods folder where your mod files will go.

You can find download links for popular mod loader server jars below:

When setting up your client, be sure to select the server version during the installation process. You’ll see this option when you launch the downloaded jar file for the mod loader you chose.

For example, the image below shows a NeoForge server being set up and the mods folder that is created automatically after the server has been started for the first time.

Step 2: Downloading Your Modrinth Mods

Next, you need to download your mods from Modrinth onto your computer. There are two main ways to do this. Through the Modrinth website or the Modrinth app.

Downloading from the Modrinth Website

1. Go to the Modrinth website and click Discover Content at the top and select Mods.

2. Use the search bar to find the mods you want to add. You can also use the filters on the left side to narrow results by game version and mod loader.

3. When you find a mod you want, click on it, then open the Versions tab.

4. Select the correct mod loader and platform/game version, then click Download.

5. Repeat this process for all the mods you plan to add to your server.

Downloading from the Modrinth App

1. Open the Modrinth App and click Discover Content button to the left and select mods.

2. Search for the mods you want to install. You can use the filters on the right side to choose your game version and mod loader for easier browsing.

3. Click on a mod, open the Versions tab, select the correct platform/mod loader and game version, then click Download.

4. Do this for each mod you want to include on your server.

💡Note: If you already have an instance set up with the mods you want to use, open the app and select your instance. Click the three dots in the top right corner, then choose Open Folder. From there, open the mods folder to quickly access all your installed mods when transferring them to your server.

Step 3: Adding Mods to the Server

Now that your server has the correct game version and mod loader, and your mods are downloaded, it’s time to upload them.

1. In your SimpleGameHosting control panel, open the File Manager tab.

2. Find and open the mods folder.

3. On your computer, locate your downloaded mods. You can drag and drop them directly into this folder, or use the Upload button at the top right of the page.

If you are copying mods from your Modrinth instance folder, click on the first mod in the list, then hold Shift and click the last mod to select them all. You can then drag and drop the entire selection into your server’s mods folder.

4. Confirm that all your mods have uploaded correctly. If some do not appear, try uploading them again. For large collections of mods, it’s best to upload a few at a time. Keep in mind that upload speed depends on your personal internet connection.

If your server is not hosted with us, you will need to locate the server’s installation folder, which was created when you first set up your server locally. Once you open the server’s file directory, find and open the mods folder. Then, simply copy and paste all of your downloaded mods into that folder. This will allow the server to load them the next time it starts.

Step 4: Starting the Server and Joining the Game

Once everything is ready, you can start your server and join to make sure the mods are working. Keep in mind that any mods installed on the server must also be installed on each player’s client. Without the matching mods, players will not be able to connect to the server.

1. Go to the Console tab in your control panel and click Start. Wait for the server to finish loading completely.

2. Take note of your server address, which you can find at the top right of the console page.

3. Open Minecraft and launch the game using your modpack profile that matches the server’s game version, mod loader, and installed mods.

4. Click on the Multiplayer menu. You can add the server to your list or use Direct Connect to test the connection first.

5. Once you are in the game, check that your mods are working properly. You can enter Creative Mode to look for new blocks or items, or explore the world to see if any new features such as structures or biomes have appeared.

If your server is not hosted with us, launch it from your server’s console by pressing the Start button and wait for it to fully load. Once the server is online, you can try joining using the server’s address.

Keep in mind that any mods installed on the server must also be installed on each player’s client. Without the matching mods, players will not be able to connect to the server.
