What to Do If the Authentication Servers are Down

Sometimes, you may come across an error that the authentication servers aren't responding whilst attempting to connect to your server, like the one shown below. This specific problem is unfortunately not one we can control, as it stems from issues from Mojang's end.

When the authentication servers go down, you likely will not be able to join your server. Thankfully, there is a way to get around them, so that you won't have to wait for them to come back online to get back to the action!

Online Mode

🛑 WARNING: Sometimes, users may lose their inventory when switching off 'online mode.'

By default, your server will be set to "Online Mode", where it can communicate with Mojang's authentication servers. You can disable this option to cut the connection between the authentication servers and your server, but know this comes with some risks!

Without the authentication servers, your server is more susceptible to username spoofing, and whitelisting will not be available. Additionally, user skins may not work at all while online mode is off.

It is recommended to re-enable Online Mode as soon as possible once the authentication servers are back online!

Changing Online Mode

First, navigate to your server's panel and go to the File Manager tab

Then navigate to server.properties

Once you've opened this, you'll be met with a text file with many different options. For our purposes, we'll be looking for the option called "online-mode". It can take one of two values: "true", or "false". By default, this is set to true. Set this to false in order to disable online mode as shown below, then hit Save Content.

Once you've done this, your server's online mode will be disabled, and you should be able to join!

⚠️ Again, be sure to reenable Online Mode as soon as possible once the auth servers are back up! You can do this by simply setting the false value back to true! Failure to do so may result in a loss of data or progress!
