How To Shrink a Minecraft World

2 min. readlast update: 01.28.2026

🌍Why Shrink Your World?

Server owners usually trim worlds for a few simple reasons:

  •  Save disk space (worlds can hit 50–200GB fast)

  •  Faster backups & restores

  • Clean up abandoned exploration, or corrupted chunks

  • Preparing for a world border or soft reset

⚡Needing to GROW your world instead? Or pre-generate chunks? Take a look into our guide on Using Chunky to pregenerate worlds here.

🧱 How World Trimming Works

Minecraft worlds are stored in chunks (16×16 blocks). These live inside region files found in:

  • world/region
  • world_nether/region
  • world_the_end/region

When you trim a world, you’re deleting chunks outside your chosen area. If players ever go there again, Minecraft will regenerate fresh terrain using the seed.

📏 Pick Your Radius First

Before trimming, decide how big the world should be:

  • 🏠 2–5k blocks – Small SMP / RPG servers

  • ⚔️ 5–25k blocks – Medium SMP, factions

  • ☠️100k+ - Anarchy Server (Often require large worlds, incurring disk-space management needs)
  • 🎯 Targeted cleanup – Keep only active areas

Make sure important builds, farms, and portals are inside the radius.

🛠️ The Best Tool: MCA Selector

✅ Safe Trimming Steps

  1.  Back up the entire world folder

  2.  Stop the server completely

  3.  Open the world in MCA Selector

  4. Select chunks outside your radius

  5. Double-check important areas

  6. Delete selected chunks

  7. Repeat for Nether & End if needed

  8. Start the server and verify builds

❌ Common Mistakes

  • Trimming without a backup

  • Forgetting the Nether or End

  • Deleting chunks with farms or portals

  • Assuming WorldBorder removes chunks

  • Running tools while the server is online
