How to Reload Chunks in Minecraft

4 min. readlast update: 06.05.2025

This guide will walk you through how to reload or regenerate chunks in your Minecraft world. Occasionally, chunks may not load or function correctly, which can lead to problems like missing blocks, visual glitches such as falling through the ground, or general performance issues.

Reloading or regenerating these chunks can help fix these problems and improve the overall stability of your game. We’ll also share some additional tips in case you’re still experiencing performance issues after trying these steps.

What are Chunks in Minecraft?

In Minecraft, a chunk is a 16×16 block section of the world, used by the game to divide the map into smaller, manageable pieces. These chunks are stacked vertically in 16-block-tall segments, which helps the game load and process the world more efficiently.

Chunks are generated around the player when they first enter the world. This process is shown on the world loading screen. The layout of chunks is determined by the world’s seed, meaning if you use the same seed again, the chunks will generate in exactly the same way.

How to Reload Chunks in your Minecraft Singelplayer World

💻 PC/Windows

1. Travel to the affected area in your world.

2. Press F3 + A at the same time. If done correctly, a message will appear in your in-game chat that says: "[Debug]: Reloading all chunks."

  • This will reload all chunks around your current location.
  • If your keyboard doesn't have an F3 key, you can use Fn + 3 + A to reload chunks.

🍏 Mac & Macbook

1. Travel to the affected area in your world.

2 Try pressing F3 + A to reload chunks.  If done correctly, a message will appear in your in-game chat that says: "[Debug]: Reloading all chunks."

  • If that doesn’t work, press Fn + F3 + A. MacBooks often require the Fn key to access F-keys.

To make function keys (like F3) work without holding Fn every time:

1. Go to Apple Menu > System Settings > Keyboard

2. Enable "Use F1, F2, etc. as standard function keys"

  • This change makes shortcuts like F3 + A easier to use in Minecraft.

🎉 Great job! You now know how to reload chunks in your Minecraft world. Restarting the game can also refresh chunks around your player, but for quicker and more reliable results, using F3 + A while in-game is the best option.

How to Reload Chunks in your Minecraft Multiplayer World

If your world is hosted on a server, restarting it will reload all saved chunks, which can help with minor chunk issues.

For more control, you can use mods or plugins like WorldEdit or Chunky for example to run commands that let you regenerate or reload specific chunks.
