How to Get Wither Roses in Minecraft

In this guide, we’ll go over what the Wither Rose is, how you can get it in both Survival and Creative mode, what you can use it for, and a few helpful tips along the way. Whether you're looking to use it for decoration, farming, or defense, this guide will help you get started.

What is a Wither Rose?

Wither Roses are a special type of flower in Minecraft. They look different from regular flowers and have a unique effect. When a player or most mobs walk through a Wither Rose, they receive the Wither effect, which slowly reduces health over a short period of time.

These flowers don’t grow naturally in the world like daisies or tulips. Instead, they appear only when a mob is killed by the Wither, a powerful boss in the game. Because of this, they’re considered rare and are usually used in advanced builds, traps, or mob farms.

How to Get Wither Roses in Survival Mode

Since Wither Roses don’t spawn naturally, you’ll need to set up the right conditions to get them. The only way to collect them in Survival mode is by having the Wither kill mobs. When a mob dies directly from the Wither’s attack, a Wither Rose appears at the location where it died.

1. Gather Wither Skeleton Skulls

  • You’ll need three skulls to summon the Wither. These can be collected by defeating Wither Skeletons found in Nether Fortresses. The drop rate is low, so having the Looting enchantment on your sword can help speed things up.

2. Collect Soul Sand or Soul Soil

  • You’ll also need four blocks of soul sand or soul soil, which can be found in the Nether, especially in Soul Sand Valleys.

3. Find a Safe Location

  • It’s best to summon the Wither far away from your main base. Some players build a secure obsidian cage or go deep underground to keep the Wither contained and prevent destruction.

4. Place Passive Mobs Nearby

  • Before summoning the Wither, fill the area with passive mobs like chickens, pigs, cows, or sheep. Chickens are a great option because they’re easy to spawn using eggs and don’t run around too much.

5. Summon the Wither

  • Place the soul sand in a T-shape, then add the three skulls on top to spawn the Wither. Once it begins attacking and kills the mobs, Wither Roses will appear where the mobs died.

6. Collect the Wither Roses

  • Walk over and pick up the roses. Just be careful, stepping on them can apply the Wither effect to you too, so armor is recommended.

How to Get Wither Roses in Creative Mode

If you’re playing in Creative mode or want to skip fighting the Wither entirely, getting Wither Roses is simple.

1. You can find Wither Roses in the Creative inventory under the Nature or Decoration Blocks tab. Just search for “Wither Rose” and drag it into your hotbar.

2. Alternatively, you can this command to give yourself any number of Wither Roses:

/give @p minecraft:wither_rose <amount>

  • Replace <amount> with the number of roses you want, and they’ll appear in your inventory.

Uses for Wither Roses

Wither Roses aren’t just decorative. They have several practical uses in both Survival and Creative gameplay.

  • Black Dye
    • You can craft black dye by placing a Wither Rose in a crafting grid.
  • Suspicious Stew
    • When combined with a bowl, red, and brown mushrooms. A Wither Rose can be used to make Suspicious Stew. When eaten, the stew gives the Wither effect to the player for a short time.
  • Traps and Defenses
    • Since Wither Roses damage most mobs and players, they’re useful for traps or base defense. You can place them in hidden spots to deter intruders or use them in redstone traps to cause extra damage.
  • Mob Farms
    • Wither Roses can be used in automatic mob farms. When placed correctly, they can damage or kill mobs without the need for lava or weapons, making them a good choice for passive or hostile mob grinders.
