How do I know if the Authentication Servers are Down?
Generally speaking, the first warning sign you will get about the authentication servers being down will be a message that looks similar to this:

For more sporadic or short-lived outages, DownDetector can be a straightforwarded, simple way to tell if there may be ongoing issues with Mojang's servers.
