Backing up your Minecraft server is something you need to do before you make any major changes to your server. This ensures that if something goes wrong, you can easily rollback to the backup you made and continue enjoying your server.
Below, we outline how you can make a backup of your server using the SimpleGameHosting Control Panel.
Step 1: Login to The SimpleGameHosting Panel
First things first, you will need to login to the control panel.
Once you are logged in, select the server you want to backup.
Step 2: Locate the Backup Section
With your server selected, navigate to the “Backups” page in the menu bar at the top. Here, you will see any active backups for your server.
Step 3: Create a Backup of Your Minecraft Server
You will see a “Create Backup” button in the bottom right of this page. Click that to open the “Create server backup” dialogue box.
In this box, simply name your backup (this can be anything or even left blank resulting in your backup just having the date and time the backup is made as the name of the backup), and click the “Start Backup” button.
Your backup will then start automatically. You know it is in progress as there will be a circle spinning on the new backup. Once this spinning circle icon disappears, your backup is complete.
Step 4: Access Your Server’s Backup
Navigate back to the “Backups” tab in the control panel if you aren't there already.
In the Backups area, you will see the backup of the server you just made along with any other backups of your server. There are a few options for backups that can be accessed by clicking the three dots on them.
📥 Download
Clicking this downloads a copy of the backup. This can be good if you want to test things in a local game or just download them for safekeeping.
🔨 Restore
This can be used to revert your server back to the state it was when the backup was created.
When you click this a dialogue will appear where you can choose to "Delete all files before restoring backup." In most cases, doing this is recommended as if you don't delete all files on the server before restoring, your issue may persist past the restoration.
❗ Please note that doing this will cause any changes that occurred on your server since the backup to be wiped.
Click the "Restore" button to restore your server to the backup selected.
🔒 Lock
If you lock a backup, it cannot be deleted until it is unlocked. This is a great way to ensure you don’t accidentally delete or remove an important backup.
To unlock a backup, simply click the three dots, choose "Unlock".
Then click "Okay" in the dialogue box that appears to confirm the unlocking.
🗑️ Delete
If the backup is unlocked, you will see a delete option for the backup.
Doing so opens a dialogue box where you can click "Continue" to fully delete the backup. Doing this permanently removes the backup, and it cannot be recovered.
