Mods can transform Minecraft by adding new features, mechanics, and creative possibilities. One of the easiest ways to install and manage mods is through the CurseForge app. This guide explains how to set up a modded Minecraft experience while keeping everything organized and compatible.
Step 1: Installing the CurseForge App
The CurseForge client is designed to make managing mods simple and organized. It automatically handles compatibility, updates, and required dependencies, so you do not have to manage those details manually.
1. Go to the CurseForge download page.
2. Download the Standalone version of the CurseForge app.
3. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the app.
- Once installed, open the app to begin setup.
Step 2: Creating a Modpack Profile
Before installing mods, you need to create a modpack profile. A modpack profile determines the Minecraft version, mod loader, and setup you will be using.
1. Open CurseForge and click the plus icon (+) in the top left.
2. Select Minecraft: Java Edition from the list of available games. You may need to search for the game on your computer to get it to show.
3. In the popup, keep the Standard option selected and continue. You will now see the My Modpacks tab.

4. To manually create a profile, click Create.

5. Enter the following details:
- Modpack Name – Any name you like.
- Minecraft Version – For example, 1.21.8 or whichever version your mods require.
- Game Type/Mod Loader – Choose Fabric, Forge, or Neforge for example depending on your mods.
- Mod Loader Version – Select the mod loader version that matches the mods you plan to install.
6. Click Create and wait a few moments for the app to generate the new profile.

👉 Tip: If you are not sure what Minecraft version or mod loader you need, browse mods in the CurseForge library first. You can even click Install on a mod before making a profile, and the app will automatically set up the correct version and loader for you.
Step 3: Adding mods
With your profile ready, it is time to add mods.
1. Open your profile and click the Add Content button in the top right corner.

2. Use the search bar or browse the library to find mods that match your selected version and loader.
3. Click Install on the mod you want. The app will download and add it to your profile.

4. Wait for installation to finish. The install button will disappear when complete.
5. Return to your profile by pressing the back button at the top left and confirm that the mod is listed.

💡Note: In our example, we installed the Waystones mod. Along with it, the CurseForge app also installed Balm, which is required for Waystones to function. This happens because some mods depend on other mods, known as dependencies, to run properly.
Step 4: Launching Minecraft
Once your mods are installed, you are ready to play.
1. From your profile, click the Play button in the top right corner.

2. The CurseForge client will launch Minecraft with the correct version and mod loader.
3. At the main menu, select Singleplayer and create a new world.
4. When the world loads, your mods should be active. Depending on the mods you added, you might see new blocks, items, or menu options immediately. The examples below show the Waystone mod we installed being active on the newly created world.

Troubleshooting Tips
Game crashes on startup
This usually indicates that a required dependency is missing, or a mod is not compatible with your selected Minecraft version. Check the mod’s page for version and dependency requirements.
Sometimes the game can crash due to not having enough RAM allocated to the game. Increasing the amount of RAM allocated to the CurseForge app can also help. For detailed instructions on adjusting RAM, see our guide here.
Mods do not appear in game
Make sure the mods were installed in the correct modpack profile and that the appropriate mod loader (Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge) is selected.
Some mods also require a new world to be created in order for them to install and function properly. For example, the Biomes o Plenty mod would need to have a new world created to generate the new biomes the mod adds.
Performance issues
Some mods can be resource-intensive and may cause lag or stuttering. Consider installing optimization mods such as Sodium, Lithium, or OptiFine to improve performance. Increasing the amount of RAM allocated to the CurseForge app can also help. For detailed instructions on adjusting RAM, see our guide here.
