How To Add CurseForge Mods to a Minecraft Server

3 min. readlast update: 11.11.2025

CurseForge is a host of tons of mods for Minecraft, each of which are unique in their own ways. This guide will give a brief rundown of how to install mods from this platform onto your server.

Finding a Mod

Of course, the first thing we'll need to do is find the mod(s) we wish to install. We'll simply head over to CurseForge, and browse around. You can use their Search feature to find a specific mod, or simply look at what's popular to see what fits your needs.

For the sake of this guide, I'll be downloading and installing one of my personal favorites, Mekanism.

Downloading the Mod

Once you've found the mod, check the Description area for any Dependencies you may require. In our case, Mekanism does not list any, but does have a few addons that would require Mekanism to function. We'll ignore those for now.

Then, you may visit the files tab to see all the available versions. In our case, I'm simply going to download the most recent version for NeoForge 1.21.1

With this saved on your PC, you may now navigate to your server.

Setting up the Server for Mods

If your server does not yet have the right version installed, you may need to clear out the server and install the right version. If you already have the right version installed, you may skip this portion of the guide.

Clearing the Server:

While your server is offline, go to the File Manager tab, then select all the files except for the eula.txt file. Then, press delete to clear out the server's previous data.

Next, head to the Modpacks & Versions tab in order to install the version we'll need for the server. In our case, I'll be installing NeoForge 21.1.212, the latest available for 1.21.1.

To finish the setup, head back to the console page and press Start. Once it has started successfully, press Stop.

Verify the server has shut down, then proceed back to the File Manager tab. If everything's worked out, you should see a Mods folder now.

This is where we'll put the new mod.

Be sure to delete the world that was generated during this process, or else the initially loaded chunks will not have the data given by your mods:

Installing the Mod

To install our mod, we can simply open the Mods folder and drag-and-drop the mod inside like so:

The file should upload like so:

Now we'll go back to the Console tab, and press Start. The server will load the mod(s), and it will be installed on your server!
