Armor is an essential within Minecraft's survival mode, and it only becomes more crucial when introducing enchantments to your favored defenses. This guide is dedicated to the various enchantments for each of your pieces of armor, and recommendations for which may be needed in certain situations.

Universal

The following enchantments can be found on all armor pieces, regardless of type:

Protection

Protection is an extremely useful enchantment, providing a 4% reduction in damage from all sources per level of the enchantment. This stacks across all of your enchanted gear, leaving a max of 64% total reduction if all your equipment has Protection IV. If you place Protection on your gear, however, you will not be able to use its specialized variants alongside it (being Blast, Fire, and Projectile Protections).

Fire Protection

Fire Protection protects against direct fire damage by 8% per level, as well as reducing the duration of afterburn by 15% per level, with a maximum of four levels. Both of these have a cap of 80%, and cannot exceed this cap, meaning that only 10 levels of enchantment across your entire set of armor are needed for maximum effect. Very useful for Nether exploration. Cannot be combined with other Protection enchantments on the same piece of gear.

Projectile Protection

Projectile Protection protects you from ranged attacks, such as Skeleton Arrows, Drowned Tridants, or even Llama Spit. It has a max of four levels, each level reducing projectile damage by 8% with a maximum cap of 80% across all of your armor. Extremely useful if you have a Skeleton problem. Like the others, it cannot be combined with other Protection based enchantments on the same piece of armor.

Blast Protection

Blast Protection, as the name suggests, protects you from explosions. It has a max of four levels, reducing 8% explosive damage per level. Like the others above, it has a maximum protection of 80%, meaning only 10 levels across your entire set of armor would be needed for maximum effect. On Java edition, this enchantment also reduces knockback from explosions by 15% per level, but does not stack with other equipment with similar enchantments, instead using only the highest available Blast Protection enchantment to reduce the knockback. Like its brethren, Blast Protection cannot be used with other Protection enchantments on the same piece of gear.

Thorns

A fitting enchantment for vengeful players, Thorns gives your armor a 15% chance per level to deal damage back to your attacker. The more items you have with thorns on it, the higher chance of hitting your enemy back. Thorns is an extremely useful enchantment for PvP purposes, but also helps to grant you breathing room in a pinch against swarms of hostile mobs.

Unbreaking

Unbreaking is simply an enchantment to enhance the longevity of your armor or other items, and comes with a maximum of three levels. Per level, it decreases the chances of your item losing durability on use. In your armor's case, it will decrease the chance of losing durability upon being hit. Incompatible with Mending.

Mending

A universally loved enchantment for any tool, weapon, or armor piece, Mending will restore the durability of your items using the XP you pick up from killed entities. If you've gotten mending on your armor, try not to damage it when possible so it doesn't suck away your hard-earned XP. Incompatible with Unbreaking.

Helmets/Cap

Helmets (or Caps if you're using Leather) have special enchantments allowing for underwater exploration. Useful if you're looking to explore ocean monuments or underwater caves.

Aqua Affinity

Aqua Affinity is a single level enchantment for helmets that removes the penalty for mining underwater, effectively increasing the speed in which you break blocks whilst diving. This is an extremely useful enchantment for doing underwater mining of any type, and highly recommended for those trying to find buried treasures within the ocean.

Respiration

Respiration is an enchantment with a maximum of three levels, each of which increases the amount of time you can spend underwater without drowning. Enchanting a turtle shell with this enchantment gives even more extra time. It is recommended to run this enchantment if you expect to be diving underwater for extended periods of time, as the extra breath may prevent you from experiencing a diluted death.

Chestplates/Tunic

Providing the most overall protection of all armor pieces, the Chestplate (or it's Leather counterpart, the Tunic) has no specialized enchantments. Despite this, it is recommended to prioritize Protection (or any of it's more specialized variants depending on the threats around you) to complement the damage reduction the Chestplate already provides.

Leggings/Pants

Leggings (or Pants for Leather) have only one unique enchantment specialized for those who like Rogues:

Swift Sneak

Swift Sneak is a simple enchantment, it increases the movement speed of crouching or crawling, allowing you to sneak around faster. It has three levels, and can only be found in Ancient Cities. This enchantment is particularly useful for stealthing through the Deep Dark or for catching other players off guard in PvP.

Boots

Boots are fitted for mobility-based enchantments, allowing for a mixture of protection from clumsy falls or swift traversal of otherwise difficult terrain:

Feather Falling

Feather Falling is an enchantment that lowers the amount of damage you take from falling (by any means) by twelve percent per level, to a max of 48% at level four. Feather Falling is extremely useful for traversing rough terrain or chasms, and can very well save you from an accidental fall from grace (quite literally).

Feather Falling also stacks with Protection, resulting in further damage reductions.

Soul Speed

Soul Speed is an enchantment that increases your movement speed across Soul Soil and Soul Sand, and can only be acquired by trading with Piglins. Soul Speed is an essential enchantment if you value movement speed whilst travelling through the Nether, especially through Soul Sand Valleys. It has a max of three levels.

Depth Strider

Depth Strider increases your movement speed in water by 33% per level, with a max of three levels. At max level, you will swim as fast as you can walk on land. If you're looking to traverse massive underwater sections quickly, Depth Strider is a perfect fit for you. Recommended to pair with Respiration on your helmets.

Frost Walker

Frost Walker, obtainable only through raids, fishing, or chest loot, will freeze water blocks as you walk over them, creating a solid surface of ice for you to run across. It also negates damage taken from Magma Blocks and Campfires by walking on top of them. Extremely useful for traversing bodies of water quickly on their surfaces.

At max, Frost Walker has two levels, the second having the biggest radius. It is mutually exclusive to Depth Strider, and you will not be able to combine the two once one is applied.
