3 min. readlast update: 08.04.2025

Yes, shields can be enchanted in Minecraft. They are a valuable part of your defense, and applying enchantments can greatly improve their effectiveness. Whether you are protecting yourself from hostile mobs or facing off against other players, enhancing your shield can give you a strong advantage. This guide will explain how to enchant a shield and detail the enchantments you can use.

Things to Know Before Getting Started

Shields cannot be enchanted directly using an enchanting table. Instead, you will need an anvil and enchanted books to apply enchantments.

Only three enchantments can be applied to shields:

  • Unbreaking (I-III): Increases the chance that the shield does not lose durability when used.
  • Mending: Uses collected experience orbs to automatically repair the shield over time.
  • Curse of Vanishing: Causes the shield to disappear when the player dies, preventing it from being dropped. This enchantment is commonly used in PvP worlds or servers to keep gear from falling into enemy hands.

Each enchantment has a different enchantment cost when applied at an anvil, similar to enchanting items at an enchanting table:

  • Unbreaking I: 1 experience point
  • Unbreaking II: 2 experience points
  • Unbreaking III: 3 experience points
  • Mending: 2 experience points
  • Curse of Vanishing: 4 experience points

Make sure you have enough experience points before applying enchantments

How to Enchant Your Shield in Minecraft

To enchant your shield in Minecraft, you will need the following items:

  • Anvil – Required to combine the shield and enchanted books. Note: An enchanting table will not work for shields.
  • Shield – The item you want to enchant.
  • Enchanted Book – Must contain one of the following enchantments: Unbreaking (I–III), Mending, or Curse of Vanishing.

Steps to Enchant Your Shield

1. Place the anvil on the ground and open its interface by right-clicking (or using the interaction key).

2. Insert the shield into the first slot on the left.

3. Place the enchanted book into the second slot next to it.

4. Check the experience cost displayed below the resulting enchanted shield.

  • If the text is green, you have enough experience.
  • If the text is red, you need more experience before you can complete the enchantment.

5. Drag the enchanted shield from the result slot into your inventory. This will deduct the required experience points. Your shield is now enchanted!

You can also stack multiple enchantments on a single shield by repeating this process with additional enchanted books. Keep in mind that the experience cost will increase each time you add a new enchantment.
