A Guide to Piglins in Minecraft

3 min. readlast update: 09.29.2025

Piglins are a valuable source of materials in the Nether, and can be a vital tool in order to get yourself out of some situations. Piglins are a neutral mob that can spawn in Nether Wastes, Crimson Forests, and Bastions.

Behavior

Piglins, while a neutral entity, will become aggressive to players not wearing a golden piece of armor within any of the four available slots. They are equipped with Golden Swords or Crossbows, and are capable of swarming players if there are multiple nearby, so always try to keep at least one piece of Gold armor on you at all times while exploring the Nether.

Piglins will also become aggressive if you attempt to mine Gold near them, or attempt to take from their chests in their bastions. If you're going to do either, be sure you're not being watched.

Piglins can be traded with by dropping them Gold Ingots.

Trade

When a Golden Ingot is dropped within range of them, they will prioritize picking up the Gold, examining it. This process will "distract" the Piglin, causing it to stop attacking you. You can try to use this time to create distance or to equip a piece of Gold armor. If you equip Gold armor during this time, the Piglin will stop attacking you when finished with the examination.

Once the examination is finished, the Piglin will drop a random item for the player, such as Obsidian, Fire Charges, Arrows, and more. This item is determined by a loot table, of which you can find here on Minecraft Wiki.

Do note that Baby Piglins are unable to barter, and will instead keep the Gold Ingot you drop them without giving anything in return. The only way of returning this ingot is killing the offending Piglin.

Other Interactions

Piglins are collectors of most things Golden. Items such as bells, Golden Weapons and Tools (be it Swords, Axes, etc.), Golden Carrots, and more will cause a similar effect to the trading system, in which they will approach the item and examine it. Instead of giving you an item, however, they will either equip or simply store the item they've retrieved. An item taken by a Piglin can always be reclaimed by killing them. Piglins with stolen items will never despawn.

Note that Piglins can take armor you've either lost, discarded, or offered, meaning that a careless action may result in a Piglin getting a massive upgrade in protection. Piglins will prefer Golden armor above all else.
